Death and dying, life and living are natural cycles. The Bible explores seven year cycles of prosperity and famine, and forty year cycles of slavery and freedom. Our recent Member Monday discussions have revolved around the topic of eighty year cycles as outlined in The Fourth Turning.

Wars, pandemics, famine, economic depressions, political revolutions and failed states are just a few triggers that end stale cycles and start fresh new ones. Since these cycles have been with us throughout history, the question is, what is the best strategy to deal with them.

Remembering “this too shall pass” is a good place to start. Facing our fears and maintaining a stiff upper lip is a useful tool. Finding meaning in our lives and continuing to work on our BHAG is a must. William Shakspeare and Sir Isaac Newton did some of their best work during these chaotic transitions.

Drinking our own kool aid and taking our own advice to heart, we decided not to sit on our tushes during this pandemic, but move forward to complete the transition of Highland from an office to a club, from my generation’s aesthetic and technology to Dustin’s generation, requiring crazy-fast fiber optic WiFi and a well calibrated Cappuccino machine.
