Philosophy is the study of fundamental truths about the world, ourselves, and our relationships. Simply stated, philosophy is "the love of wisdom."

The Greek Stoics of 2400 years ago approached life’s problems backward and asked: Knowing we will die soon, is the problem we face today significant in the long term?

Assuming we are lucky and resourceful, we must then ask, how should we enjoy the fruits of our life’s labor before we die? What should a successful “retirement” look like?

Some people’s ideal retirement plan is a life of leisure, waiting for 5 pm to roll around for their first cocktail. Others take up golf, tennis, and travel or strive to become coaches, mentors, or philanthropists. The Greeks believed an ideal retirement entailed the accumulation of knowledge and wisdom. In short, one should strive to become a philosopher.

But how does one accumulate wisdom in a world dominated by TikTok and Instagram, with attention spans of under a minute?

City Club proudly offers a Securus Locus with great food, eclectic art, and award-winning gardens where members learn and grow into philosophers. By way of example, member Niko Kovacevic, in association with Paul Diduch, a University of Colorado professor of philosophy, is hosting an eight-part series to study Plato’s Republic, asking fundamental questions such as “What is Justice?”  Member Steve Smith’s weekly Jeffersonian discussions of the past eight years, Jeremy Ciampa’s weekly Notes From The Underground, and monthly literature, finance, and economic discussions by members Eddie Zapata, Jack Phillips, and Matt Harder are great opportunities to gain knowledge and wisdom, connect more deeply with new members, and have fun.

Worrying about tomorrow’s problems robs us of the opportunity to live fully today. As we age, we lose some of our physical strength and intellectual capacity, but we can strive to gain emotional and spiritual strength, which leads to wisdom.

Next time someone asks, “What will you be when you grow up? " Answer, " A philosopher.” And there is no better place to do that than Highland City Club in Boulder, Colorado, USA.
