Roger Linfield
Roger Linfield was born in the Boston area and moved west in stages, eventually reaching Southern California. He attended graduate school in astronomy at Caltech and worked for 18 years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Being at JPL made it possible to use telescopes in space, which opened up a new world for Roger.
After Southern California lost its charm, in 2001 Roger and his wife moved to Boulder where he began working at Ball Aerospace, and joined City Club shortly after retiring in 2015.
For many years, Roger’s primary hobby was rock climbing, with plenty of opportunities to climb in and around Boulder. More recently, he has shifted to hiking and scrambling up Colorado’s peaks, an activity which keeps him busy from June until September each year. To help stay fit during the non-hiking season, he cuts firewood in the hills in winter.
Roger enjoys visiting City Club for a chance to meet a variety of interesting people, and of course for the terrific food. He has given four astronomy lunch talks at the club on topics like the threat from Near Earth Asteroids, with more in preparation.
